Women are disproportionately affected by the multifaceted impacts of climate change. Building women’s capacity to prepare for, cope with, and adapt to climate shocks is imperative. Multifaceted economic inclusion programs offer a viable solution for governments to address this challenge. These programs can foster women’s economic empowerment while promoting the adoption of climate-smart techniques and enhancing their financial resilience in the face of adverse climate events, especially in the agriculture and natural resource management sectors.

It is time we start treating extreme poverty as the global emergency it is. This International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, October 17, we are looking at 100 million more people being forced into extreme poverty by the end of 2021 as a result of COVID-19, joining nearly 700 million people who were living in extreme poverty before the pandemic struck.

ADB hosted an online event on social protection for economic inclusion, which centered  on the graduation approach as a key strategy for addressing remaining poverty and reducing inequalities in Asia and the Pacific.

Refugees living in low- and middle-income countries are especially vulnerable to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on data from eight hosting countries before COVID-19, we find that refugees are 60 percent more likely than host populations to be working in highly impacted sectors, such as accommodation and food services, manufacturing, and retail. As a result, COVID-19 will likely lead to widespread loss of livelihoods and an increase in poverty among refugee populations.
